چکیده

Based on the field emission (FE) results achieved with regular test arrays of gold [1] and platinum [2] nanowire (NW) patches, FE cathodes (Ø 5 mm) with a triangular patch array (Ø 150 μm, pitch 320 μm) of cylindrical AuNW (10 cm, Ø 200 nm, length 12 μm) were fabricated by means of a shadow mask during heavy ion irradiation of polycarbonate foils. The emitter distribution and local properties of such cathodes were measured with the field emission scanning microscope (FESM). Well-aligned FE from all patches was obtained at fields below 25 V/μm as shown in Fig. 1a which reveals typically 4-8 emitters per patch. This result confirms our strategy of emitter redundancy for improved FE homogeneity of NW cathodes.

Correlation between field emission current limits and morphology changes of poly- and single-crystalline gold nanowire patches

Well aligned and highly efficient field emission (FE) results have been obtained with regular arrays of gold nanowire (NW) patches [1]. However, strong variations of the maximum current Imax among single Au-NW patches have been attributed to contact problems between wires and substrate [2]. Recently we have focused our research in finding a systematic correlation between FE properties and morph...

Efficient field emission from structured gold nanowire cathodes

Based on last years field emission (FE) results achieved with randomly distributed free-standing gold nanowires (NW) [1], cathodes with regular arrays of Au-NW patches (50 μm diameter) were fabricated by means of a shadow mask during heavy ion irradiation of polycarbonate foils [2-3]. The number density, diameter Ø, and length L of the NW were controlled by the ion fluence f, foil etching time,...

Nanowired three dimensional cardiac patches

Engineered cardiac patches for treating damaged heart tissues after a heart attack are normally produced by seeding heart cells within three-dimensional porous biomaterial scaffolds. These biomaterials, which are usually made of either biological polymers such as alginate or synthetic polymers such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), help cells organize into functioning tissues, but poor conductivity o...

Patterned Growth of ZnO Nanowire Arrays on Zinc Foil by Thermal Oxidation

A simple approach is demonstrated for growing large scale, nearly vertically aligned ZnO nanowire arrays by thermal oxidation method. To reveal effect of temperature on growth and physical properties of the ZnO nanowires, gold coated zinc substrates were annealed at 300 °C and 400 °C for 4 hours duration in air. Xray diffraction patterns of annealed samples indicated a set of well defined diffr...

Field emission of metal nanowires studied by first-principles methods

We study the field-emission properties of an ultrathin silver nanowire using first-principles methods. The simulation and analysis of the field emission are carried out based on density-functional theory using a localized basis scheme. Through the explicit time evolution of wavefunctions, we obtain the emission currents and spatial distributions of emitted electrons from a silver nanowire. In c...
